97% lies
It’s not just the number; it’s the magnitude.
The other day I read this:
Research by PolitiFact, one of the leading fact-checking sites in the United States affiliated with the Poynter Institute for Journalism, found that only 3 percent of former President Donald Trump’s statements are completely true. According to the analysis, which reviewed more than 1,147 statements by Trump up to the latest available update, only 36 statements were classified as “true,” while 78 percent were rated mostly false, false, or completely false.
Certainly, one reason folks are fed up with Trump is the amount of lying that occurs daily, and the repetition of those lies once already debunked. But I think what really grinds my gears is the stuff he says that is completely, utterly unbelievable. As in, “No one in their right mind could believe that shit.”
But they do. Or, at the very least, seem to. Do the Republicans who support him really believe everything he says? Don’t they realize the damage he does not only to his own credibility, but theirs, too? Guess not. And the GOP isn’t the only entity that gets my ire. The media hardly ever pushes back, no matter how egregious the lie. Consider two things Trump said on the 2024 campaign trail:
“Starting on day one, we will end inflation and make America affordable again, to bring down the prices of all goods.”
“Energy costs, all of it, air conditioning, heating, all of it, including gasoline, will drop by more than 50% within the first 12 months…”
No one ever asked, “How will you do that?” It’s possible no one asked because such a claim is ludicrous. But it came at a time when the media was scrutinizing every detail of Harris’s economic plans.
Quick reminder that subscribing to Mike’s Substack is free:
Yesterday, the bullshit continued unabated. Trump in Kentucky:
“Inflation is plummeting, incomes are rising, the economy is roaring back, and America is respected again, perhaps respected like never before.”
He also claimed Democrats want to force everyone to buy electric cars, something he said repeatedly on the campaign trail: “…everybody’s going to be forced to buy an electric car…Thanks to me, you can now buy any kind of car you want.”
“We’re also slashing drug prices at record levels, with price differences of 700 percent. Can you believe it?”
And of course, the crowd clapped like trained seals.
Me? No, I don’t believe it. Neither should you. And we should all push back on the bullshit. Because that’s what it is. Don’t believe me? Check out the “trending” in today’s Yahoo News:
